Building on the success of Step Out Arts’ British East Asian Choreographers Development Scheme 2009 (BEACDS 09), we are proud to present Stepping East 2010.

Saturday 2 October

10.30 – 16.30: Symposium
17.00 – 21.00: Showcases

An all day event comprising a symposium and a showcase at Greenwich Dance

Symposium: The symposium comprises daytime seminars which are specifically aimed towards performance artists covering topics such as “How to write a successful funding application” and “How to promote and tour your work”, these workshops will be led by Theresa Beattie and Deborah Badoo. Following the seminars will be a debate session focusing on “British East Asian Aesthetics – Real or Imagined?” which will include key speaker Chris Bannerman and an artists panel including Annie Pui Ling Lok and Khamlane Halsackda. Places are extremely limited for the London workshops so early booking is essential.

Seminar for dance artists: How to write a funding application: 10.30 – 12.00

Details: This is an interactive and practical workshop that takes a step by step approach to preparing funding applications. We will explore ways of expressing artistic aims in compelling ways, meeting the aims of different types of funders, and making budgets make sense. Theresa’s workshops are informal and welcoming with a lively exchange of information and ideas.

Speaker: Theresa Beattie is a dance consultant who has worked extensively on artist development, producing, and business & project planning. Clients include National Dance Network; Akademi;  and the Royal Opera House. She was Director of Artist Development at The Place and worked as Head of Dance for Arts Council England, London.

Seminar for dance artists: How to promote and tour your work: 13.00 – 14.30

Details: This seminar will offer participants an opportunity to gain an insight into practical methods of promoting their work, developing partnerships and managing themselves and their work in this uncertain artistic climate.

Speaker: Deborah Badoo MBE is the Artistic Director of State of Emergency, a dance performance and production company, which develops the profiles of Black dance artists in the UK through its acclaimed programme of commissions, festivals, education and professional development.

Debate – British East Asian aesthetics: real or imagined? 15.00 – 16.30

Details: This debate occurs at a time when the UK awaits its new three-year financial plans, predicted to bring about a new ‘age of austerity’. Simultaneously the world’s economy is shifting toward Asia where a new energy and confidence is driving developments. The debate addresses questions about East Asian aesthetics and asks if they are informing the work of British-based artists – and if so, in what ways?

Key Speaker: Chris Bannerman: After an extensive career as a dancer, choreographer and arts education worker Christopher Bannerman became Professor of Dance and Head of ResCen Research Centre at Middlesex University. His research focuses on the processes and practices of artists and recent work includes the international Danscross project in collaboration with the Beijing Dance Academy.

Artists Panel: Annie Pui Ling Lok and Khamlane Halsackda are both successful applicants from last years Step Out Arts British East Asian Choreographers Development Scheme (BEACDS 09).

Showcases commence at 17.00: The showcase will feature works in progress by Step Out Arts four new associate artist choreographers: Lucia Tong, Julia Cheng, Jia-Yu Corti and Yu-Yu Rau plus further development work performances by two of last years British East Asian Choreographers Development Scheme 2009 artists Khamlane Halsackda and Chisato Minamimura. Wednesday 6 October

A Showcase evening event at University of Bedfordshire Theatre

This showcase comprises works in progress by Step Out Arts four new associate artist choreographers Lucia Tong, Julia Cheng, Jia-Yu Corti and Yu-Yu Rau. Each of these four choreographers were chosen to take part in Stepping East after a nationwide selection process and have worked with a professional mentor to advance their choreography and dance practice. All four pieces will feature innovative and contemporary choreographic ideas that have been researched and developed as part of the Stepping East scheme which is funded by Arts Council England.

After the performances there will be a Q&A session. This also represents a chance for the choreographers to meet their peers and, in turn, Step Out Arts hopes that promoters and programmers will discover new artists they would like to work with in the future.
