Professional development

Step Out Arts (SOA) aims to nurture professional British East Asian (BEA) artists and increase their visibility within the UK’s dance industry. We believe that by working in partnership with other dance organisations we can raise awareness of BEA artists and increase the creative opportunities available to them, especially our Associate Artists.

The success of the British East Asian Choreographers Development Scheme 2009 (BEACDS) which was funded by Arts Council England in partnership with Greenwich Dance, University of Bedfordshire and Chinese Arts Centre benefited four artists, two of whom are further developing their work by applying for funding and touring their work with SOA’s support.

Building on the success of BEACDS 09 new works from young and up-and-coming British East Asian choreographers will be showcased in Stepping East 2010 with the support of Greenwich Dance and University of Bedfordshire.

Both venues will be showcasing works in progress by SOA’s four new Associate Artists: Lucia Tong, Julia Cheng, Jia-Yu Corti and Yu-Yu Rau. These four artists will present innovative and contemporary choreographic ideas researched and developed as part of the Stepping East scheme. The event at Greenwich Dance will feature further development works from last years performances by two of last year’s BEACDS associate artists Khamlane Halsackda and Chisato Minamimura.

British East Asian descent includes: Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, China, East Timor, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, North Korea, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and their diasporas.
